Aeration means to get better air circulation into the soil underneath the turf of a golf course. This is necessary for the health of the microbes that live in the topsoil. Grass depends upon these microbes because they convert the nitrogen of fertilizer into a form that the grass can use.
On a farm, plowing accomplishes aeration. But plowing would put a golf course out of service. So aeration takes the form of poking holes (or slits) into the turf every few inches. Golfers consider this to be a nuisance. But without it, the fairways would die.
So you may occasionally see that tractor towing the aeration machine. Be glad it's there so that you may play golf year round.
